The 2001 Minnesota Vikings season opened under a cloud, the team still mourning offensive tackle Korey Stringer, who had died of heatstroke during training camp on August 1, 2001. In his honor, the Vikings wore a memorial patch on their jerseys all season — in both purple and white to match the two uniform sets — and retired his No. 77 at halftime of a game that November.
